Wanting to Break Out Of A Soul-Sucking Job?
I was talking to my younger cousin yesterday. She’s in her early 20s and is “stuck” at a job that she doesn’t like; in an industry she hates. She asked me for some advice.
Here’s what I said:
“When you’re young, you think life is short and that you’ve got to figure out everything right now. But the older you get, you realize that life is actually pretty long. The average life expectancy in the US is 80 years old. And a lot of people work until their late 60s/early 70s. So, if you’re 25 years old, you’ve got plenty of time to figure things out.”
She has a lot of interests and wasn’t sure how she would know if any of them would work for her.
So, my advice was to write down the 3 or 4 jobs/industries that she was interested in and then reach out to people in those industries. Either ask your network if they know someone, or look on LinkedIn and reach out to some people.
Tell them you’re interested in making a career change and wanted to know more about their industry. Offer to take them to coffee or lunch.
Most people will be happy to help a younger person who is interested in bettering themselves,
So, if you’re young and are unhappy about your job, give this a shot.
It’ll give you real world insight into the job you’re thinking about, instead of taking a new job and hoping for the best.
And don’t beat yourself up. You’ve got plenty of time to figure it out.
Hell, I was selling kitchen equipment last year and now I get to be a full time podcaster.
I didn’t start until I was 38. So, trust me. You’ve got time.
